ST. CLOUD — The Minnesota Department of Education recognized the St. Cloud school district Wednesday as one of six districts that showed exemplary success in their Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports, or PBIS, programs.
The schools and districts recognized for the 2019-20 school year have improved school climate and student achievement through their PBIS programs, according to a Wednesday press release from the education department.
The program launched in Minnesota in 2005 and is now implemented in 769 public schools across the state, according to the release. The program requires schools to monitor data about student behavior and disciplinary practices and trains staff to proactively support positive behavior as opposed to zero-tolerance discipline policies.

In addition to being recognized as a district, St. Cloud schools recognized for their work are Clearview Elementary, Kennedy Community School, Lincoln Elementary, North Junior High, Oak Hill Community School, Quarryview Education Center and Westwood Elementary.
Pleasantview Elementary School in the Sauk Rapids-Rice district was also recognized for its PBIS program. Mississippi Heights Elementary was recognized for its program for the 2018-19 school year.
The 67 schools and six districts statewide recognized Wednesday have implemented the program for at least three years, have a plan to continue the program, and demonstrate how they share what they learn with other schools and districts, according to the release.
